About Gail & her Greyhounds

My greyhound story begins as do the very best stories – As a love story! When my husband and I met in 1993, it was love at first sight, and it wasn’t long before we were planning our life together. After we got married, we’d save up & buy a house, then get a dog, and then have some kids. I’d never had a dog, although I was always the on-call person to take care of all my friend’s dogs. I thought a little beagle, maybe a good-natured little mutt…I was mystified to hear him say he wanted a greyhound….could one even own a greyhound as a housepet?? Apparently, yes!

I had never even seen a greyhound, except on the side of a bus! My husband took me to the track on a racing day. At this particular track, one was able to get right up to the fence to see the dogs run by. I was amazed at their speed & focus; but what really charmed me was at the end of the race they were swirling around, wagging their tails & looking just like any bunch of playful, happy dogs. A few minutes later, they passed through the gate right next to me, and they all engaged me their big, goofy greyhound grins. They looked at me with bright, curious stares, prancing paws, and more (very long) wagging tails. I was sold.

It took us a few years of saving to get the wedding and the house, but the we spent a lot of time reading Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan. By the time we brought home Peaches, a spooky black runt with a stunning white blaze on her chest, we were pretty well-prepared, for newbies. We had 8 wonderful years with her.

Our next greyhound was a big, 85 lb. male, Shannon. We named him for the River Shannon, because he was from Ireland, and like a river – dark, swift, strong, and silent. I know what you’re thinking, that Shannon is a girl-name. Well, even I had to chuckle when the vet kept calling him “she.”

Shanny was such a gentle giant, we fully expected that, someday, a sparrow would land on his side while he napped in the grass. We had Shanny for 10 years, and had a whole different set of experiences with him.

Our current greyhound is Lily, a red-and-white dog, whose coat proves that God has a sense of humor. She has two huge, perfectly round spots adorning her right side, and more smaller spots than any dalmation I’ve ever seen.

So, here we are, 23 years later, bringing you Greyhound Homecare, where I will bring you the best articles and videos on how to get the most out of your life with your wonderful, lazy, zany, quirky, absolutely adorable greyhound. If you have another sighthound, such as a whippet or an Italian greyhound, you will find some of this useful. You may even enjoy this content if your dog is another breed.

Of course, you’ll see the usual required disclaimer that website advice does not take the place of veterinary consultation, but that’s not what this website is here for. Lots of other people do that, and do it very well. I’m here to answer those questions and address those topics that you’re wondering about, but about which you never really get a satisfactory answer.

As of this writing, we’re still getting set up here; but I’m looking forward to doing some fun features, starring Lily, on our YouTube channel, currently named Greyhound TLC (at some point, we will be changing it to Greyhound Homecare, like this site).
